Misdemeanors
Misdemeanor offenses are considered less serious than felony offenses. A misdemeanor is usually punishable by a maximum of 364 days, or less, in the county jail (verses the possibility of state prison time starting at one year and can range up to life for certain felonies).
Misdemeanors include, but are not limited to:
Possession of Cannabis under 20 grams (up to one year in jail)
Petty Theft (up to 60 days for a first offense and 1 year for a second offense)
Driving Under the Influence (many legislatively mandated penalties and they vary significantly)
Disorderly Conduct (maximum 60 days in jail)
Battery (up to one year in jail)
Criminal Traffic Violations (between 60 days jail to one year depending on your record)
Trespass After Warning(up to one year max)
Violations of Restraining Orders (up to one year in jail)
Domestic Violence (between 60 days to one year in jail depending on the crime)
Municipal Ordinance Violations (up to 60 days)
Criminal Mischief (between 60 days an one year depending on the amount of damage)
Stalking (up to one year)
Refusal to Submit to Testing (up to one year)
Prostitution (depends on priors)
Culpable Negligence with Injury (up to one year)
Contributing to Delinquency of a Minor (up to one year)
Carrying a Concealed Weapon (up to one year)
Possession of Alcohol Under 21 (up to 60 days)
Reckless Driving (up to 90 days in jail)
Misdemeanors can be punishable by probation, jail time, community service, counseling, restitution, monetary fines or costs, costs of prosecution, investigative costs, etc.
Certain misdemeanors are critical to get resolved properly, such as shoplifting or theft charges as they are crimes of dishonesty and can affect employment, impeach your testimony anytime you testify as a witness in a court of law, etc).
Other crimes that can affect you and your job are domestic violence and restraining order cases as you will not be able to own or possess firearms or ammunition, you must stay away from certain people or areas, you may not be able to see your children, pleas to these charges are not allowed to be sealed, etc.
